Barry Dixon

Barry Dixon has been building an impressive portfolio of residential homes and commercial projects over the last decade. Dixon's work includes work with clients near and far, from our nation's capital all the way to Beijing. His new book, Barry Dixon Interiors, brings you into his world of design by showing you eleven of his best works, including his own home in Warrenton, Virginia.

Barry Dixon's Interior Design

One of the key elements of Barry Dixon's style is the use of what fits the habitant rather than what fits the theme. In this regard, you'd be hard pressed to find a room that you can give a definitive classification. One of Dixon's most popular quotes does much to simplify the tenets by which he works:

A room should start a conversation before people actually start exchanging words.

Dixon's style will invariably reflect the personalities and passions of the inhabitants. The home of avid oceangoers is sure to be filled with patina-covered accents, plank wood flooring, and an assortment of chairs that look like they've been bought from ports around the world.

This global feel is no surprise. Dixon's childhood brought him to locations far removed from our everyday world, such as Africa and India. This broad life experience empowers Dixon to find the common element between totally dissimilar pieces to make an environment that keeps you interested. Historically, Dixon isn't shy about mixing art-and-crafts, period antiques, and woven elements that suggest African or Indonesian culture. It's not about simply mixing old and new, it's about making a space that is appropriate to a person's desire rather than dogmatic design principles.

I have his book

It's an awesome coffee table book. Some of the stuff is too traditional for me, but when throws modern in the mix I dig his style.
