Megerian Area Rugs

We got a few moments to speak with John Megerian, of Megerian rugs. The Megerian family has been designing and creating Armenian rugs since 1968, although the trade has been in his family for many years longer. John Megerian's great grandfather fled Armenia prior to the tragic conflicts in 1915 that would eventually culminate to World War 1. He brought his brother with him to Manhasset, New York where the two of them started what would become one of the most prestigious area rug manufacturers in the world.

Megerian Antique Style Area Rugs

Megerian has come a long way from their first 300ft2 showroom in Manhasset. Megerian's hand made rugs are made the same way they would have been centuries ago. Many of the skilled craftsmen employed by Megerian have a family history of weaving that goes back for generations. Megerian has always remained so close to the Old World roots of rug weaving that they became a natural choice for antique collectors that needed a worn rug restored. This lead to the eventual production of antique style rugs.

Mamluk Area Rugs

Mamluk rugs, a collection that Megerian has been produced for over 30 years, are created in the same ancient style used in antique Egyptian rugs. The Mamluk collection began shortly after genuine antique Egyptian rugs became difficult or impossible to find. Today, most antique Mamluk rugs have been destroyed or incorporated into private collections.

The authentic Mamluk rugs are woven in Egypt by the same families that produced the original antiques, but the style is far from old hat. New colors like chocolate brown and chartreuse add depth and modern flair to these storied designs. This fresh take on an ancient style allows you to incorporate rich culture into your interior decor.

Oushak Area Rugs

Oushak Rugs, named for the Turkish city in which they were produced, are the most popular rugs in the entire Megerian collection. Wildly popular in 16th century Europe, genuine Oushak antiques are becoming scarce and frequently auction for tens of thousands of dollars! Characterized by their soft feel and intricate patterns, the Oushak rugs are a testament to Megerian's commitment to authenticity. Even under the studied eyes of seasoned antique collectors, these rugs are indistinguishable from their ancient counterparts. Oushak rugs used to be considered less durable than other rug designs, but tight quality control and a hand refinishing process in New York has allowed Megerian to redefine the Oushak as one of the highest quality rugs available. Megerian Oushak rugs are popular with interior designers because they perfectly match genuine antique rugs, but are much friendlier on their client's budget.

Oushak rugs are highly collectible right now; the rising value of the Euro, the developing economies in the Middle East, and political unrest in that region could make the production of authentic Oushak rugs impossible. Consider that the art of making the Oushak rugs offered by Megerian may be lost to the world within the next five to ten years! Beyond the beauty of the rug itself, the Oushak rugs are an attractive investment.

New Megerian Area Rugs

Megerian has always been a strong proponent of carefully selecting materials that are authentic to the original production. There is little room for change in the formula, but Megerian saw an opportunity to create their rich dyes from natural products and decided to act on it. In their new collection with Barry Dixon, Megerian is using natural plants and flowers gathered from the Caucasus to add natural color to their area rugs. Madder's root, twigs from a Mullberry tree, Pomegranate rind , and ground nutshell are just a few of the natural ingredients used to color their new collections.

Megerian continues to create exciting new product. The announcement of their second line of area rugs with renowned interior designer Barry Dixon at AmericasMart expands the possibilities of what Megerian rugs can do in your space. John Megerian is bringing new ideas and fresh looks to the company that his ancestors built with a family tradition of hard work and dedication.

How much would I expect to pay for an antique rug?

It dosent seem like an area rug would be an investment. Im sure there is a difference that matters to someone between an area rug from a store and an area rug from someone like megarian. How much could i really sell a rug like this for 10 years down the road?

Mamluk Area Rugs

Small surprise, then, that some carpet, sprung memory foam mattress producers today are interested in trying to recreate the Mamluks in whole or part.
Woven Legends, a Philadephia-based company, has for several years worked with Turkish weavers to try to duplicate some of the Mamluk Rugs in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

I am very much lured by the artistic antique style area rugs. The rugs are the parts of home improvement and best decoration. To set up such rug in our home is not a complete job. We have to take care of rugs very well. Cleaning the rugs or carpets in regular basis with the help of cleaning companies like Dallas carpet cleaners is fine idea.
