Uwharrie Chair: Sustainable, Smart

Uwharrie ("You-wah-ree") furniture began as a garage operation in High Point, NC. Each chair would be cut and assembled in one garage, and hand finished in another. The careful attention to detail and patient assembly process yielded a pine chair that resists splintering and lasted 30 years or longer. Uwharrie dries their wood twice, once before and once after the pressure treatment, to ensure the furniture will not bend or warp with time. The pressure treatment process protects the wood from moisture, insects, and mildew, and will not corrode the stainless steel hardware used to join each piece.

The quality of Uwharrie Chair attracted famed artist and furniture designer Bob Timberlake. Timberlake, an inspired artist and clever businessman, saw the American-made, eco-friendly long lasting attributes of Uwharrie outdoor furniture and moved quickly to ink a licensing deal. Uwharrie continued to grow at phenomenal speed: their color selection grew from 5 colors to 28, and their designs began to inherit an artistic, avant garde style. These exciting new design attracted world-class destinations and resorts to furnish their outdoor areas with Uwharrie chairs.

Uwharrie outdoor furniture is created from southern yellow pine, a fast growing hardwood with an undeserving reputation of being splinter prone. Uwharrie uses a long-lasting finish that actually levels and stretches with the natural expansion of the wood. This means that the finish does not crack, peel, or splinter. The wood, sourced from Georgia and the Carolinas, is carefully dried to ensure that it will last for years without issue. Uwharrie uses a few patented shapes in their design that make the seat much more ergonomic than traditional outdoor furniture.
