What kind of protection do you suggest?

I need some advice and ideas. I have traded services for a brand new couch. It is a coffee brown leather sectional sofa with camel colored pillows and seat cushions. I have 2 year old, and although I didn't spend any money on the couch I would like to protect it for as long as possible.

With all that said, what would some of you suggest I do to protect it. I found out that manufacturer runs some sort of Scotchguard or protection on all fabric from the mill. So there is that tiny bit of protection. I figured I would need to do plenty more than that tho.

Also I think this might be a good place to share how to maintain those hard to clean furniture items, like what to use and what NOT to use.

Thanks ahead of time for any of your tips.

Just Some Tips that may help...

Great Post! and that leather sofa sounds BEAUTIFUL ! Well, I don't claim to be a leather expert at all, but I think I can definitely give you some tips that I picked up after destroying a good bit of leather in my days.

1. You HAVE to make sure you some some gentle soap to clean dirt speckles--maybe a soft cleansing soap like Dove

2. You mentioned you have a child, so we all know that means marker, pen, crayon, and pen stains will certainly be found on every square inch on the sofa. For that I suggest a simple vinegar and water concoction, and that should come right off.

3. DO invest in a great leather conditioner. There are some really goods ones on the market and you can find a quality conditioner that is pretty cheap too!

HOPE ALL THIS HELPS!

tips

To keep your leather couches looking nice, mix one cup of salt water (you can make this with one 3/4 cup tap water and 1/4 cup sea salt), two tablespoons of baking soda, and one teaspoon of flour in a large bowl.

Dip wet rag into the mixture and wipe down the couches. Then dry with a dry rag. It will brighten and clean even the dirtiest leather couches.

Use water based cleaners and protectors and do not use anything containing oils, waxes or silicones

The value of oil to wood is folklore. Of course, oil gives a wood finish a superficial shine, but it isn't beneficial.

RE : What kind of protection do you suggest

Here are some ways to ensure your solid hardwood furniture's longevity:
For your comfort, as well as to protect your hardwood furniture, use a humidifier in the winter and an air conditioner in the summer to keep the relative humidity at 25 to 35 percent.

Avoid placing hardwood furniture directly in front of radiators, heat runs or fireplaces.

Don't expose hardwood furniture to continuous direct sunlight. Draw the curtains occasionally.

Store table leaves as close as possible to the table. Keep them in an upstairs closet rather than in a damp basement, so that the table leaves are adjusting to the same relative humidity.

I suggest go to Scotchguard

I suggest go to Scotchguard and buy some fabric and apply in your couch. Re-move your couch into the wall then tell your kids to refrain from playing on the couch, that means the pets too.
